Sealants are used to prevent dental decay in the deep groves of the back teeth. Sealants are a thin covering that fill the grooves to keep out plaque and food. Since, the covering is only over the biting surface of the tooth, areas on the side and between teeth cannot be coated with sealant. Brushing, flossing, using a fluoride rinse and making good nutrition choices are still very important in preventing decay in areas not covered by the sealant.
